Meet Your Workshop Guide:

Hi! I’m Alyssa DeHayes, publicist for over a decade for labels of all sizes and artists at every stage. I taught music publicity and promotion at UGA for 5 years, and I’ve worked on marketing, social strategy, project management, and advertising at labels like Smithsonian Folkways and Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty Records. My own label, Arrowhawk Records, turns 8 this year as we prep catalog release #30.

I’ve secured press in The New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and niche blogs, and project managed a Billboard charting record this year. After years of 1:1 consulting sessions to guide bands through next steps, I’ve found it hard to keep up with the volume of requests.

I started Album Relief to translate my consulting session takeaways and hard-won experience into workshops and resources for artists doin’ it for themselves, to develop narratives, plan doable timelines, make smart spends, and connect with fans and media in a meaningful, sustainable way.

Can you call it a surprise drop…

if you didn’t build an audience to surprise?

Start taking action instead of just hoping for the best.

Artist without a team?

This is for you.

By learning to do things yourself, you’re more likely to attract your dream team, and work better together when the time comes.

All my workshops were created for self-released artists as a middle ground between having a team, and throwing your whole album online and crossing your fingers. If you’re already huge, surprise drops are cool. If you’re not, take some time and lay the groundwork.

“We couldn’t have released a Sufjan album in 2020 without Alyssa’s help. Her expertise is so broad, ranging from high level strategy like knowing what to say, and when, and how to say it, all the way to the daily grind of releasing a record like responding to customers and mailing merch. That fact that she pays attention to artistic and creative goals while keeping on the eye on the pragmatics of actually making money is a rare combination.”

— John Beeler, Label Director at Asthmatic Kitty Records

“Alyssa is that rare publicist who understands the whole landscape and uses that marketing expertise to help her artists grow.”

— Dean Christesen, Head of Marketing & Artist Manager at Spacebomb

Doing it yourself doesn’t have to mean doing it alone.

“I've really enjoyed going through Alyssa’s Press Relief course and have found it extremely valuable. It's been a while since I had personally been on the artist side of things and there've been a lot of helpful resources and tips to consider as I’ve been clawing my way back into the current press landscape. As someone who tends to juggle a lot of projects I still have a tendency to silo my work, but its been great advice to acknowledge the different paths or interests you've taken into your story, as all of that feeds into and adds dimension to your creative identity.”

- Raul Zahir De Leon, CANANDAIGUA

“Drafted my first bio. Your class and guidance have already been invaluable to me! Thank you so much! Your class Press Relief makes some things that feel foreign and out of reach so much easier to take on and understand.”

- Rachelle Barr, Cartinglee

Cursing the algorithm is a waste of time.

And gaming it isn’t a sustainable long-term strategy. Gimmicks only annoy fans.

You need a sound strategy and pro-active media outreach to get in front of new ears.

Boosting posts and calling it a day isn’t enough.

Can you just do it for me?

I developed workshops because I only take on a small number of projects at a time. If you’re seeking a done-for-you solution, reach out. I’ll take a look, share with my Riot Act Media coworkers, and see if we can point you in the right direction.
